Yoga Exercise with Meditation

An Introduction to Yoga

Commitment to Yoga

Deciding to take up yoga means making a commitment to improve the quality of one's mental and physical life. The classic yoga texts stress the importance of practicing in a tranquil place at regular times. Today, the psychological significance of this approach is clear, for it is now understood that to repeat an activity at set intervals accustoms the mind to accept it as part of everyday life. Like the sages of ancient times, yoga teachers today recommend setting aside regular hours to practice hatha yoga and to meditate in a suitably quiet place.

Developing the self-discipline to practice regularly is part of yoga, for discipline is, essentially, practicing something until it becomes habitual. At first this may seem off-putting, adding another burden to what is, for many people, already an over-demanding lifestyle. However, when what is being practiced produces benefits, the discipline quickly stops being a chore and becomes a natural and worthwhile habit.

Ideally yoga sessions need to take place every day at about the same time. Many asanas exercise the digestive organs, and for this the stomach and intestines need to be as empty as possible, so it is best not to have eaten for at least two hours before practice. A session might A morning yoga session makes the day's events easier to deal with. last from about half an hour initially up to perhaps two hours once the beginner's stage passed. Yoga practice is energizing, not tiring, so people who like to be up early in the morning prefer to practice before breakfast. Others find it an excellent relaxant and pick-me-up in early evening.

People who work from home often find late morning the best time. Although it seems a simple enough project to set aside hour or so at the same time every day to practice yoga, modern lifestyles make it almost impossible for some people to do People whose work involves frequent and often unpredictable travel or overtime sessions, and anyone with a young family, finds scarcely possible to organize a single meal for the selves at the same time each day. The best way to approach this problem is to be by scaling it down, planning one or two practice sesssions at the same time each week. Most people find an hour on a Saturday or Sunday morning, or late in the evening once or twice a week. Late evening when most people are tired, is not an ideal time practice, but for some people it is a good way unwinding at the end of a very long and stressful day and they sleep more deeply as a result.

Stick to scaled-down plan zealously and the benefits will be so obvious that making more time for practice moves close to the top of the list of priorities. A daily sequence of asanas, lasting at least 15 minutes preferably nearer half an hour, will make an immense difference to life.

For beginners, the most important objective is to practice regularly. Brush aside worries about tasks unfinished or not yet begun -yoga works to clear the of daily preoccupations and students often find can organize their lives more efficiently as a result. Resist the temptation to miss practice because "something comes up" by rescheduling the unforeseen . If something unavoidable does intervene, fit in practice after it.

Finding somewhere quiet can be difficult. The world is full of underused quiet places, however, such as bedrooms, bathrooms, balconies, and gardens, family rooms when children are sleeping, unused offices and meeting rooms, even a washroom. It is possible to learn to ignore incidental noise, such as aircraft and traffic, so for many a quiet place is simply somewhere where other people cannot immediately get hold of them.

To practice yoga the only equipment you need is a mat enough for you to lie full-length on. You need to wear light, roomy clothing, but you should be barefoot. you have long hair it should be tied back. If you live a cold climate you may want to practice in a heated room at first, although once you become adept you could learn how to generate your own body heat. For breathing and meditation you can sit on the floor or comfortably upright in a chair. For better concentration a room with no telephone -or take the receiver the hook and close any windows. To eliminate expected interruptions turn off mobile phones, pagers, alarms on watches, electronic organizers, and computers -and hang a "Do not disturb" notice outside the door. Yoga requires only peace and quiet and regular commitment.
