Yoga Exercise with Meditation

An Introduction to Yoga

Yoga and Meditation

For many thousands of years meditation has been central to the development and practice of yoga. Only during the 20th century have schools of yoga emerged th ignore the mind and focus exclusively on exercising the body. Hatha yoga bridges the gap between traditional and new approaches, teaching ways of concentrating and controlling the mind alongside stretching exercises and asanas.

Some people who practice yoga in the West today try to reject all mental aspects of yoga, and devote themselves instead to learning and perfecting asanas, the physical side one. Some see that this is not really yoga, but a form of gymnastics, as to alleviate illness and maintain health, to overcome mental problems, and sustain sense of calm and well-being involves an interplay between mind and body. To develop the body without involving the mind is possible - but is can be seen as half of yoga as there is no learning of how to be calm, fullfilled, or happy.

There are many who follow the paths of the classic yoga schools of meditation, seeking to achieve a mystical state of union with the universe. but most people who practice meditation do so for simpler reasons, to overcome feelings of dissatisfaction and to develop a more serene outlook.

In essence, yoga is meditation. The Yoga Sutras, the writings of the sagePatanjali, is a collection of meditation. The yoga sages practiced asanas other than cross-legged sitting positions in which they sit without moving for long periods. About 1,000 years ago hatha yoga developed to complement the classic approaches offering physical techniques such deep breathing and the practice asanas. The object of these techniques is to deepen concentration in preparation for meditation.

People who are just beginning hatha yoga often find themsel dismayed at the prospect of trying to govern the emotions and control their racing thoughts, and prefer to concentrate on stretching and exercise. Gradually, however, through deep breathing and relaxation, they find themselves gaining control over the mind without even trying. Many hatha yoga teachers encourage this strengthening confidence by introducing them simple meditation techniques very early on. When they are making progress with the asanas and have praticed rhythmic breathing, students are encouraged improve their concentration by practicing visualisation (focusing the mind on an image with positive associations) while practicing the asanas.

Later, they may begin short sessions aimed at focusing the mind and improving concentration, perhaps with the help chanting or other techniques. Learning how to avoid being overwhelmed by senses is the first stage on the way to acquiring the outlook that is necessary to acquire full control of the mind., which may lead to practicing deeper meditation.
